May 29, 2013. Behind The Scenes

One of the ways that we like to stay sharp here at Urban Barn is to run design challenges; we set some guidelines (room layout, inspiration, etc) and see what the staff can come up with. I recently ran one for staff across all our store locations using our online Makeroom Room Planner, and the results were so great that I wanted to share them with you here!
The challenge: How well do you know your small spaces?
I created a template for a 413 square foot condo, and staff had to create a fully functional space – in other words, one where people could eat, sleep, and lounge. Making use of the ruler tool in Makeroom is key for tight situations like this, since I also asked people to ensure that there were clear pathways through the entire condo.
While I expected some interesting rooms to emerge, the winning entry totally blew me away – Elizabeth from our Barrie location submitted not one floor plan, but three! She planned a creative convertible space for a five person family. In 413 square feet. Not only was all the furniture placed, but the fabrics, accents and art were picked out, making the space move-in ready! (My favourite detail was the H20 bathmat placed outside the shower).
There were dozens of great entries from stores in all provinces, which made me so proud of our talented staff – if you want to try it out for yourself, bring your floor plan into a store, and see what layouts we can help you create!
