First, I want to make it clear that I’m absolutely NOT complaining about the beautiful weather we’re experiencing here on the West Coast. I love the sun and effect it has on me, it makes me happy! The fact of the matter is that I’m not what you would call a sun seeker; I don’t tan, I burn. It’s not a pretty sight. The heat can literally suck the life out of me some days so I’m always up for a new way to cool down! I’ve collected a few tips, some classic some new…
Cooling your home:
Lock down. Close all windows/blinds/drapes…everything tight during the day. Once it starts to cool down in the evening, open select windows for the night.
Take a break from housework and cooking! Forget cooking and cleaning during the day, don’t run large, heat inducing appliances until the evening or first thing in the morning. Even better, go out for dinner…..it’s patio season!
Use your fans efficiently – sounds complicated but it’s really not… Create a wind tunnel! Early morning or evening, place a fan in front of an open window, facing in and up towards the ceiling. In another room, either across or down the hall, place a fan in front of the open window facing out. If you can’t do this, just open your windows and use your bathroom fans. This will pull the cool air through the rooms and hall and actually create a breeze – yes, a beautiful cool breeze!
Head to Toe. It’s a known fact that keeping your head or your feet cool, you’ll cool your entire body. Cold cloths, head-wraps or a hot water bottle filled with cold water is a quick way to cool down.
Cool Dreams – literally! Chill your pillow cases in the freezer for about 30 minutes or longer before bed or freeze a 2 liter bottle of water and wrap it in a light blanket or towel then cuddle up. Sounds crazy but it works.
Drink up! Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate…I know you hear this all the time, it’s a fact; frequently drinking water every hour will keep your body cooler throughout the day.
Clean & Cool. Enjoy a relaxing, long, cool shower. It doesn’t have to be icy cold to bring your temperature down – whatever you can handle.
