With a fresh, bright and colourful palette of summer colours now in stores, it’s easy to fall in love. Knowing how, where, when and how much of a bright punch of colour to use requires just a little bit of planning. A well designed room is based on balance of colour (among other things.) A rule I have learned and have put into practice in my own life is the 60-30-10 colour rule.

Following this rule, 60% of a room can be filled with a dominant colour, 30% a secondary colour and 10% with a single (or a couple) accent colours. In a room this is best achieved by 60% of the room’s dominant colour on the walls, 30% of the room’s secondary colour in the furniture and upholstery and the remaining 10% of accent colour in the artwork, cushions and other décor items.

Putting this into practice using the soothing tones of Attleborough Wall Art from Urban Barn as inspiration:

Start by choosing your wall colour (or you may already find your existing wall colour within your inspiration – easy!). Pulling out the most neutral hue from the print, I’ve chosen the paint colour Shoreline by Benjamin Moore for the wall colour:

Secondly, we identify the secondary colour which will make up the next 30% of the room. Using the dark charcoal grey/black colour from the print I have chosen a dark sofa, the Fillmore Sofa:

Finally, the most fun colour or colours to choose – your accent colours which will make up the final 10% of your room. This is the part of the design process that requires the most careful consideration. From the painting above, the most obvious accent colour is aqua. Taking a closer look at the print, you may identify a complimentary but less obvious colour – in this case, tangerine.

Here are some fun accessory ideas to finish the look.
Mongolian Toss Cushion – Aqua, Waverly Frames, Element Chandelier, Adeline Throw – Tangerine
