Nothing gets us in the holiday spirit like trimming the tree. As the centrepiece of your seasonal decor, the tree sets the tone for your holiday style and lets you experiment with colours and textures to make Christmas time truly merry and bright. To show off your spruce or fir in its best light, keep reading for our favourite advice on how to decorate your Christmas tree.
Decorate in Layers
From glitzy and glamourous to earthy and organic, decorating in layers is the best way to execute your Christmas tree vision. Start with the lights, working from the bottom up and wrapping lights from trunk to tip around major branches. This lighting technique makes sure your tree and all the ornaments are evenly lit.
Once the lights are up, wrap your tree with textural elements like garland, ribbon or tulle. Thicker textiles like tulle can be attached to the base of branches then looped across the tree in random patterns or wrapped around the tree from top to bottom. If you’d like to give your tree a fuller look, use natural-looking garland to fill in any gaps between branches.
When it’s time to hang ornaments, we recommend starting with the most important; beautiful pieces and sentimental favourites deserve to be seen! Next, hang the largest ornaments evenly around the tree, remembering to vary the height and depth. Follow with medium-sized ornaments and finish with the smallest. When you’re done, ornaments should be evenly spaced around the tree. Stand several feet back from the tree to check for bare spots.
Mix it Up
We love a classic Christmas ornament, but don’t be afraid to mix it up with different shapes and textures on your tree. Even if you’re going for a cohesive look with a curated colour palette, use ornaments in varying sizes, materials and finishes. Matte velvet, sparkles and long slender ornaments keep your tree looking interesting and beautiful from every angle. Non-traditional and homemade ornaments are a great way to add new textures and shapes to your tree and give you an excuse to host pre-Christmas crafting nights with friends.
Hide the Stand
Whether you hauled home a real tree fresh from the lot or an artificial Christmas tree fresh from our store, a metal tree stand probably isn’t in line with the rest of your holiday aesthetic. Luckily, Christmas tree stands are easy to disguise. Choose a tree skirt or collar to match your design aesthetic, like a woven tree collar for rustic style or soft faux fur in cozy contemporary homes. You can wrap a throw around the base of your tree for a similar effect, or get your shopping done early and pile wrapped presents around your tree to conceal the stand.
